Board of Education Member Delmont-Small Steps Down, Feb. 1, 2023

February 1st, 2023

Howard County Board of Education member Christina Delmont-Small is stepping down from her position as a Board of Education member effective immediately. Following her first term that began in 2016, Delmont-Small is leaving the Board to be able to focus her attention on the responsibilities of a new job she recently accepted. She currently represents District 1 in Howard County.

“I am grateful for the time I have been able to serve the interests of our students, educators and families,” said Delmont-Small. “After dedicating many years to the stakeholders of the Howard County Public School System, and in close consultation with my family, I decided it was impossible to properly balance the many requirements of a Board member while being able to commit my time and energy to my new job. I am appreciative for the collaboration of my past and present Board colleagues over the years and for the close partnership the Board has cultivated with Dr. Martirano.”

Prior to being elected to the Board of Education, Delmont-Small served on the executive boards of Howard County PTAs and filled leadership roles for the PTA Council of Howard County (PTACHC), including three terms on its board of Ddrectors in addition to three terms as PTACHC president. She also served on the Maryland PTA Legislative Committee and remained on the Maryland PTA Board of Directors throughout her tenure as PTACHC president.

“Mrs. Delmont-Small has served with me through my entire tenure as Superintendent,” said Michael J. Martirano, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools. “I will forever be appreciative of the passion and energy she dedicated to her role as Board member for so many years. Mrs. Delmont-Small was always prepared, insightful, and constantly seeking improvement for all aspects of the school system. At the end of the day, the students, staff and families of Howard County fueled her passion for this role. That is how her efforts will be remembered.”

“When I was elected to the Board of Education, I appreciated the historical knowledge and perspective Mrs. Delmont-Small was able to provide after serving the families of Howard County for so many years,” said Board Chair, Antonia Watts. “She took her role as a member of the Board of Education very seriously and committed her time and energy to understanding the details of the entire school system. She and I spent many hours on the phone striving to identify ways to improve student outcomes and organizational efficiencies. Her attention to detail and dedication to the role were admirable.”

Howard County Executive Dr. Calvin Ball will appoint an individual from District 1 to fulfill the responsibilities of Delmont-Small’s position through the remainder of her current term, which expires in 2024.
