The following statement was issued by HCPSS Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano on Aug. 31, 2022:

It is with great sadness that I share with you that former HCPSS Superintendent Dr. Michael E. Hickey passed away this weekend.

Dr. Hickey became Superintendent of the Howard County Public School System in 1984, a role in which he served for 16 years until June 30, 2000. During his tenure, the school system experienced its largest and fastest growth, adding almost 18,000 students and opening 21 new schools – growing from 45 to 66 facilities.

I fondly recall, when I began as the HCPSS superintendent in 2017, Dr. Hickey stopped by my office to offer his well wishes as I began my own journey. I know many of our students, staff, families and community members had the pleasure to meet and work alongside him, and share in my grief.

He will be remembered as being a personable, accessible man who was committed to getting to know his community and developing an extensive system of partnerships with the community to support students with resources and knowledge. I appreciate the guidance and friendship he extended so often to me personally.

Dr. Hickey will be missed, and his legacy will always be a part of our wonderful school district.
