Grading Changes for the 2021-2022 School Year

On Dec. 7, 2021, the Howard County Board of Education approved revisions to grading policies that adjust the weight of midterm and final exams in determining final high school course grades for the current 2021-2022 school year. Additionally, the Board determined that students at all levels who must quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure or possible exposure, but who are able to otherwise participate in instruction will have the number of days equal to the number of days in quarantine to complete the makeup work.
High school midterms and finals will each represent 5% of the final course grade for 2021-2022.
For a 1.0 credit high school course, the final grade components will be:
- Q1 – 22.5%
- Q2 – 22.5%
- Mid-term exam – 5%
- Q3 – 22.5%
- Q4 – 22.5%
- Final exam – 5%
For a 0.5 credit high school course, the final grade components will be:
- Q1 or Q3 – 47.5%
- Q2 or Q4 – 47.5%
- Final exam – 5%
Middle school students who take high school credited courses will experience midterm and final assessments during Quarters 2 and 4. These assessments may be projects, tests, or other assignments.
