Bright Minds Foundation Announces Laura Wallen Scholarship Fund

January 29th, 2018

Scholarship Honors Life and Legacy of Beloved Teacher

Bright Minds, the official foundation of the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), announces the establishment of the Laura E. Wallen Memorial Scholarship fund. The Wallen family is establishing the scholarship to honor the life and legacy of Wilde Lake High School social studies teacher Laura E. Wallen. Wallen joined HCPSS in 2007 as a social studies teacher at Murray Hill Middle School and transferred to Wilde Lake High School in 2014 where she worked until her untimely death in September 2017.

Wallen believed in the amazing potential of each of her students and in each person’s ability to have a positive impact on our world. As an educator, she changed the lives of many for the better. This memorial scholarship embodies Wallen’s values and her belief in the power and potential of the students at Wilde Lake High School.

The Laura E. Wallen Memorial Scholarship is intended to help Wilde Lake High School graduates who wish to major in one of the social sciences to pursue college studies at a two or four-year institution. Winners will receive between $1,000 and $2,500, which can be used to pay tuition, fees, or the cost of books. Scholarship applications will be released February 10, which would have been Wallen’s 32nd birthday.

To contribute to the Laura E. Wallen Memorial Scholarship fund, donate online or mail a check to the Bright Minds Foundation, 10910 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21042. Please designate “Wallen Scholarship Fund” in the comment field or on the memo line.
