Manor Woods Elementary School Named 2017 National Blue Ribbon School

September 29th, 2017

Manor Woods Elementary School was named a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The school is one of only six Maryland public schools to receive the nation’s Blue Ribbon award this year. Blue Ribbon Schools are recognized based on rigorous state and national standards for high achievement and significant improvement.

“I am so proud of the students, educators and administrators at Manor Woods,” said Interim Superintendent Michael J. Martirano. “This achievement shows a dedication to meeting the individual need of every student to ensure academic excellence, and to creating a climate where students can thrive.”

Manor Woods Elementary School has developed a highly effective School Improvement Plan that ensures excellence and growth for all students. School programs include early interventions, flexible instructional groupings, and strategic integration of technology where students are actively involved in their learning. The school excels in the arts, with nearly 300 students participating in the Manor Woods band and strings programs. The students also participate in district-level honors chorus, and represent the school in visual arts at local and statewide shows.

This announcement brings the total number of national Blue Ribbon Schools in the Howard County Public School System to 10. Other schools recognized include Centennial Lane and Clarksville elementary schools, Burleigh Manor, Clarksville, Ellicott Mills, Folly Quarter, Hammond and Lime Kiln middle schools, and River Hill High School.

The U.S. Department of Education will formally recognize the 342 honored schools at an awards ceremony at the Omni Shoreham in Washington, D.C., on November 6 and 7, 2017.
