Glenwood Middle School Recognized as Best in State in National App Challenge

January 24th, 2017

A team of students from Glenwood Middle School was named “Best in State” winners at the middle school level of the fifth annual Verizon Innovative Learning app challenge. The nationwide contest challenges students to develop mobile apps to improve societal issues in their schools and communities. The Glenwood Middle School team and other Best in State winners were chosen from more than 1,800 teams from across the country that submitted app concepts.

The Glenwood Middle School team developed an app called “Emploi,” a communication forum that will connect teens looking to earn their own money with adults who want small chores completed, including raking leaves, washing a car or walking a dog. The app helps teens develop life skills including communication, time management and self-sufficiency, while assisting adults in the community with small task completion.

Each Best in State team will receive $5,000 for their school, club or organization, and tablets for each student team member. The teams will compete to earn one of eight Best in Nation awards. The teams named Best in Nation and Fan Favorite will receive an additional $15,000 for their school, club or organization, and the chance to build their concepts into working apps with experts from MIT during an all-expenses-paid trip to the Technology Student Association Conference in Orlando, Florida in June 2017.

Voting for the Verizon Innovative Learning app challenge Fan Favorite award opened January 16 and ends February 14, 2017. Best in Nation and Fan Favorite winning teams will be announced on February 15, 2017. Visit https://appchallenge.tsaweb.org/vote to see the full list of eligible teams and to vote.

The Verizon Innovative App Challenge was created by the Verizon Foundation in partnership with the Technology Student Association to inspire student interest and achievement in STEM.
