HCPSS Students, Staff, and Organization recognized at April Board of Education Meetings

Superintendent Renee A. Foose recognized the following student, staff and organizational achievements at Board of Education meetings on April 14 and 28, 2016:
Students
Glenelg High School junior Martin Wang was recently named the Howard County Youth Volunteer of the Year. Wang primarily volunteers with Making Change’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, an organization that provides tax-preparation services to low-income families free of charge. As the award winner, Wang will have his name etched on an engraved brick in the county’s Pathway to Excellence at Troy Park at Elkridge.

Staff
Office of Secondary Social Studies resource teacher Renee Bos has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Maryland Council for Social Studies. The Council promotes and supports social studies education in Maryland and the United States.

Mount View Middle School Orchestra Director and General Music Teacher Matthew DeBeal was awarded a Teachers Are Heroes honor by Baltimore’s ABC2 and MECU credit union. DeBeal was recognized for going above and beyond his job duties, and instilling a lifelong love for learning in his students.

ARL Academy of Finance Instructor Maddy Halbach received the High School Teacher Award as part of the annual Financial Education and Capability Awards. The awards, sponsored by the nonprofit Maryland CASH Campaign, the Maryland Council on Economic Education and the Maryland State Department of Education, highlight financial education achievements of public school teachers, community champions and organizations across the state of Maryland. The awards were also highlighted during the regular session of the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis.
HCPSS Director of Purchasing Doug Pindell has earned recognition from the Universal Public Procurement Certification Council by obtaining the Certified Public Procurement Officer credential. Pindell is now among a select group of procurement professionals to be distinguished by this professional certification.

Organization
The school system recently received an Association of School Business Officials Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting. This award follows an independent review of HCPSS financial procedures and underscores our continued commitment to accuracy and transparency. This is the 12th year in a row that HCPSS has earned the award for excellence and best practices in financial reporting.
