Constellation Energy Grant Benefits HCPSS Applications and Research Laboratory

December 1st, 2015

Howard County Public School System’s Academy of Finance (AOF) at the Applications and Research Laboratory has benefited from a Constellation Energy Community Champions grant awarded to the Bright Minds Foundation, a foundation that supports Howard County students and schools.

The grant supports the Academy of Finance’s 8th Grade Initiative, which encourages middle school student interest in financial literacy, and business and finance related careers. AOF seniors provided banking and investing workshops to eighth grade students in a two-hour program called Investing in Your Future, held at ARL in fall 2015.

AOF students designed and conducted the workshops with input from members of the AOF Advisory Board, which includes representatives from local businesses and organizations. The workshops, attended by 110 eighth grade students from Harpers Choice Middle School and Mayfield Woods Middle School, explored the history of banking, the primary role of banks in the economy, early investing, why people invest, and key characteristics of different investment vehicles.
