HCPSS to Host Poetry Out Loud Competition

HCPSS will present the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015 at the Howard County Center for the Arts, 8510 High Ridge Road, Ellicott City, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Attendance is free and open to the public.

The competition is part of a national program encouraging high school students to learn about great poetry through competitive memorization and performance. Ten first and second place winners from school-based contests at Wilde Lake, Oakland Mills, Reservoir, Mt. Hebron and Centennial high schools will compete at the countywide event, and the winner will advance to the state Poetry Out Loud contest for a chance to be a finalist at the the national finals to be held in April in Washington, DC.

The contest is presented in partnership with the Maryland Arts Council, the Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment of the Arts.
