Howard County Teacher Salaries Increase for the 2024–2025 School Year

Howard County teachers will receive an average salary increase of 4.7% through salary scale and cost-of-living increases for the 2024-2025 school year as ratified in the master agreement between the Howard County Education Association (HCEA) and the Board of Education at its June 20 meeting. Based on current salary scales, the salary increase for some teachers will be as high as 5.9% while those already at the top of the scale will receive the cost-of-living increase of 2.25%.

Summer Job Fairs, June 24 and July 24, 2024

HCPSS will host a Summer Jobs Fair on Monday, June 24 at Wilde Lake Middle School (10481 Cross Fox Ln, Columbia) and on Wednesday, July 24 at Burleigh Manor Middle School (4200 Centennial Ln, Ellicott City). The fair will run noon-4 p.m. on both days.

Laurel Woods ES/Sheehy Toyota Partnership Provides Student and Staff Support at Every Turn

Over the past year, Sheehy Toyota of Laurel has found a wide variety of ways to support students and staff at Laurel Woods Elementary School. The partnership was formalized in April, outlining plans for Sheehy Toyota’s continued support for LWES and participation in HCPSS’ Apprenticeship Program.

HCPSS Students Receive Hands-On Experience at Howard County Medical Center

This is the first year Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students in the at the Applications and Research Lab (ARL) are collaborating with Howard County Medical Center (HCMC) to get hands-on observation experience in different areas of the hospital, which helps students gain exposure and explore their interests.

HCPSS Provides Certificated Staff Hiring Update Ahead of School Year Start

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is readying for the start of the school year and is continuing the hiring process to fill remaining certificated staff vacancies. The system currently has only 53 certificated staff vacancies, resulting in a current fill rate of 99%. At a similar time last year, HCPSS had approximately 25% more certificated vacancies.

HCPSS Celebrates Latest Cohort to Complete Para-to-Teacher Pathway

Twenty-three HCPSS paraeducators have earned their undergraduate degree and certification in elementary education from Bowie State University, becoming the first undergraduate cohort and the second cohort over all to ever complete the HCPSS’ para-to-teacher program. They are now eligible to become full-time teachers in the county.

Conditional Teaching: A Pathway to Becoming a Professional Teacher

Conditionally certified teachers are teachers who need to complete coursework and/or assessments to meet professional certification requirements. They are given two (and in some instances four) years within which to complete that work. If they successfully do so, they can transition from a conditional certificate to a professional certificate.
