Deep Run Elementary School (DRES) recently was named the 2026 Read Across America Day recipient by the Howard County Education Association (HCEA) and the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA). As this year’s recipient, DRES received a collection of new hardcover books for its media center, donated by MSEA. An event for the book donation, and read aloud sessions were held March 16.

“When our partners in education invest in our students, we can do amazing things,” says DRES Principal Nigel LaRoche. “Seeing HCEA, MSEA, reading specialists and teachers together reminded me of the power of collaboration as we help students grow and learn.”

“We aim to develop the joy of learning and allow students to imagine and see the world through reading and learning to further their own success,” adds MSEA President Paul Lemle. “Our Read Across program supports what schools do to grow students’ love of reading, and we look forward to expanding that love with inspiring books.”

Books donated to DRES by MSEA.

Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association, Read Across America is a year-round program focused on motivating children and teens to read through diverse and inclusive events, partnerships, and resources.
