BLM Instructional Resources
January 29th, 2026
To align with the Howard County Board of Education’s Resolution to promote the Black Lives Matter (BLM) at School 2026, HCPSS has created five optional lessons for middle and high school classes that teachers may implement under the direction of their school-based administration.
- Lesson One – Students are introduced to the historic context for and the development of the Black Lives Matter movement.
- Lesson Two – Students dig deeper into Black immigration to the United States and how these experiences differ within the Black American experience.
- Lesson Three – Students learn about the achievements and contributions of LGBTQ+ Black Americans and how their intersectionality impacted their achievements and goals.
- Lesson Four – Students investigate the dominant narratives about Black communities and how those stories are shaped and reinforced through media representation.
- Lesson Five – Students celebrate the leadership, resilience, and contributions of Black women across history and today.
These lessons, vetted through the Howard County Public School System, are the only curriculum-based activities specific to BLM that teachers and instructional staff can use. All of these lessons are optional for teachers to implement and will be coordinated across multiple disciplines under the guidance of school administrators.
