Statement from the Superintendent: Remembering Former Administrator and Board of Education Member Larry Cohen
January 14th, 2026
The following statement was issued by Superintendent Bill Barnes on Jan. 14, 2026.
I want to recognize and honor the legacy of former teacher, administrator, and Board of Education member, Lawrence “Larry” Cohen. He passed away on Dec. 27, 2025, at the age of 76.
He dedicated his life to being an educator and fierce advocate for students. He extended the deep love he had for his family members and loved ones to every child, family and staff member he encountered. It was important to him to ensure no individual was overlooked and each person felt seen, safe and supported.
Before I was Superintendent, anytime I encountered Larry, he would ask me how I was doing or ask about my wife and daughter by name and extend a few words of encouragement. From the beginning of my term as Superintendent, I could expect a phone call from Larry each month, or more frequently if he felt I was navigating a particularly difficult topic. Those calls meant the world to me. Larry was certainly someone who took the extra time to make sure we were OK and to say that he was always here for us.
Larry will be remembered for his integrity, warmth and humor, and the countless lives he impacted throughout his service in education. He will also be remembered for his impassioned “closing comments” he would share when he visited our schools.
Work hard
Never give up
Maintain your sense of humor, you’ll always need that
Be nice and kind to each other
Please be careful out there
And, as always, and most importantly, please come back to school safely every day.
Love to you all, and of course, keep smiling.
Thank you, Larry, for the tremendous difference you made in the lives of countless students, educators, families, and friends in Howard County. You are appreciated and will be missed.
