September 9th, 2025
Hammond Middle School fine arts teacher Natalie Pretzello was named one of seven finalists for the 2026 Maryland Teacher of the Year by the Maryland State Department of Education and Maryland State Board of Education.
The Maryland Teacher of the Year will be announced at the 35th Annual Teacher of the Year Awards Gala on Friday, Sept. 26.
“I am thrilled Natalie is representing the Howard County Public School System because she is a compassionate, collaborative and talented educator who is deserving of this honor,” said Superintendent Bill Barnes. “Her ability to encourage her students to take risks while building their confidence is a skillset I value greatly, and her students and colleagues alike benefit from the passion, service and leadership she brings to school each day.”
Pretzello, who this spring was named the HCPSS Teacher of the Year, joined HCPSS’ music program as a teacher in 2015, and currently serves as the Band director and related arts instructional team leader at Hammond.
“Being named a Maryland Teacher of the Year Finalist is both humbling and deeply meaningful. Personally, I hope to highlight the many successes of my students, families, and colleagues, whose partnership makes every achievement possible. Professionally, this recognition affirms the importance of music education as a powerful vehicle for equity, creativity and belonging,” said Pretzello. “I am deeply thankful to my current and former students, families, colleagues and mentors across HCPSS who have supported my growth and continue to inspire me every day.”
