Two HCPSS Schools Recognized for Military Family Support and Services

April 29th, 2025

Bollman Bridge (BBES) and West Friendship (WFES) elementary schools have been named Purple Star Schools by the Maryland State Department of Education in recognition of their strong services and support for students from military-connected families. BBES and WFES are two of only 23 schools across the state to achieve this distinction, which they will hold from 2025-2027.

To be eligible for Purple Star recognition, schools must have a dedicated military liaison, provide accessible digital resources, offer a student-led transition program, and ensure staff receive training on the unique needs of military families.

“We work very hard at BBES to ensure all of our families feel welcome and that they feel they belong to our community,” says BBES Assistant Principal Christy Conklin. “Being a Purple Star school means that we, as a staff, recognize the unique circumstances and challenges of the military child and have steps in place from the moment military families enroll to support the transition of their child to Bollman Bridge.”

“Our military serves our country by keeping us safe and protecting our freedoms; now, we show our appreciation by supporting the students and families who serve, too,” says WFES principal Debra O’Byrne. “West Friendship Elementary School being named a Purple Star School means we are committed to making sure every military-connected family and student feels welcomed, supported, and celebrated.”

Maryland joined the national Purple Star program in 2023. Bellows Springs Elementary School was one of only eight schools across the state to receive Purple Star distinction at that time and will maintain that distinction through the 2025-2026 academic year.
