Update from the Superintendent on School Safety, Oct. 24, 2024
October 24th, 2024
The following message was shared by HCPSS Superintendent Bill Barnes on Oct. 24, 2024:
Last week, Howard High School students, staff and families were at the center of a very difficult situation stemming from the arrest of a student during the school day. Shortly after the arrest, we learned of many frightening and troubling details. While this has been a very difficult situation for Howard High School students, staff and families, school safety is an issue that is deeply important to all school communities.
Today, I had an opportunity to provide a comprehensive update at the Board of Education meeting and I wanted to share my remarks with you. My remarks may be found online as part of my Superintendent’s Report, and the Board meeting archived video may be viewed 24 hours after the meeting ends, if you would like to watch the dialog that occurred following my prepared remarks.
I remain fully committed to exploring every possible solution to keep our school communities safe. But truly safe schools continue to necessitate all of us working together to ensure that what occurred last week at Howard High School never occurs again in our county or anywhere in Maryland. The safety and security of our students and staff will remain a priority until I am satisfied, our staff is satisfied, and our students, family and community are satisfied that we have strengthened all aspects of our safety and security systems.
