Get Ready for the 2018-19 School Year!
August 20th, 2018
We’re closing in on the end of summer! Here’s what you need to know for the 2018-2019 school year.
Before Day One!
All families will receive one hard copy of the 2018-2019 HCPSS calendar at the start of the school year. Print-friendly and online calendars are available on our website, and will reflect the most up-to-date information. Users also may subscribe to the HCPSS calendar and add it to the service of your choosing.
All incoming kindergarteners, new students, transfers, etc., must be registered prior to the first day of school. Enrollment requirements can be found online. Please contact your child’s school for registration dates and times.
All children must have the required State of Maryland immunizations in order to attend school. Students out of compliance or without evidence of an appointment for necessary immunizations may not be admitted to school.
Emergency Card Procedures with Family File
HCPSS utilizes Family File for parents/guardians to complete emergency information. Parents/guardians must verify and/or update information for each child, and can do so by logging in to HCPSS Connect, selecting the Family File tab and then clicking on Family File. Instructions are available online.
Our bus stop locator is now updated. Users can locate bus stops by entering their street number and name in the search field,
Each elementary and middle school provides its own school supply list, which have been compiled on the HCPSS website for your convenience. High school students will be given lists by their teachers at the start of the year. Please contact your child’s school with any questions.
Back to School Nights
The back to school night schedule for all HCPSS schools is available online. Last-minute changes may not be reflected online so please double check dates and times with your child’s school.
Our Food and Nutrition Services page has a great deal of information, including meal prices, how to pay for meals, where to view menus, nutritional and allergen information, and more.
Parents of students who qualify for Free and Reduced Meals must submit a new application every school year. Details on the HCPSS Free and Reduced Meals program are online, including how to apply.
Student Driving and Parking on School Grounds
All students drivers and a parent or guardian must attend a safe driving program in order for the student to get a parking permit. Students may attend a presentation at any location. A full list of events is on our website.
All families will receive one paper copy of the 2018-2019 Student and Parent Handbook, which is available now online.
The 2018-19 Parent and Student Interscholastic Athletic Program also is available online.
Staying In Touch
HCPSS News email messages and text alerts keep parents/guardians, community members and employees up to date on news and events, and delivers real-time notices of bus schedule changes, weather-related closings and emergency information. Parents/guardians of previously enrolled HCPSS students do not need to sign up for, or manage an HCPSS News account. All HCPSS News subscriptions are generated from information provided in Family File and have been automatically updated for the 2018-2019 school year.
HCPSS Mobile Application
Our HCPSS mobile application delivers HCPSS system and school news, upcoming events, school menus, information from Board of Education meetings, and direct connections to all system social media resources. The free HCPSS app is available on iTunes and Google Play.
In times of emergencies/school closings, information will be shared with the community through our website, social media, text messaging, email, weather hotline and the HCPSS TV station. A list of HCPSS emergency notification sources and details can be found online.
Social Media Accounts
HCPSS has active accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Additionally, many of our schools use social media to communicate to their communities. Check with your school for details.
Anyone wishing to visit a school is asked to contact the principal to discuss the purpose of the visit and to establish a convenient time for both the visitor and the school. All school or office building visitors must bring a driver’s license and sign in with our LobbyGuard visitor management system.
Parent Volunteer Procedures
HCPSS values our volunteers and the contributions they make to our students and schools. Parents who wish to volunteer must complete a brief training course online and submit a certificate of completion to their school. Details are available on our website.
Stay looped into your student’s academics through HCPSS Connect, where you can keep up-to-date with your child’s classroom by monitoring homework assignments, checking schedules and attendance records, viewing report cards and more. Login instructions for new and existing parents are available online.
Getting to School Safely
Please review with your child safe practices for walking, biking or riding the bus to school. Resources on student safety and motorist safety can be found online.
